Q: Was it nerve-wracking to launch your own company? ⠀
A: "Not a bit. I was under no pressure, no one was expecting anything from me and there was no one above me to impress — I was my own boss. So whatever came out of Lovely Lane was a bonus and the fulfillment of a dream. I launched the webshop in 2014 and used the very same budgeting and planning templates that I’d used when freelancing. In fact, I doubt I’d have been able to set up Lovely Lane without my experience as a producer: designing is only a small part of what I do; getting the stuff out there takes up a lot more time." - Marije Braber, @lovelylane ⠀

Q: Do you recall any defining moments from your childhood?
A: “Yes, the two years we spent in Indonesia. We moved there when I was six so that my dad could take up a new post at the university in Yogyakarta, and I loved it: the smells, the colours, the atmosphere! My mum kept up our Dutch lessons at home and we spent a lot of time together as a family. It was such a wonderful period that we were quite sorry to return to the Netherlands. I was brown as a berry by then, and bilingual, and had learned Balinese dance. I’d also acquired a certain something that my new Dutch classmates apparently couldn’t relate to, and they gave me the cold shoulder in response. I was a sensitive kid, so this left quite a mark. I remember that I had a scarf whose smell reminded me of my mum. So I took this with me to school each day, and I’d step out into the corridor as many as sixteen times a day just to hold it to my nose and breathe in her smell.” – Marije Braber, @lovelylane

Q: How do you produce your clothes?
A: "My sister-in-law tipped me off about a social enterprise that was run and subsidized by the city on behalf of people who’d fallen through the cracks. It was meant to facilitate their reintegration into society. There was nothing else like it, a workplace accommodating a motley crew of people making a variety of things: everything from men's bracelets and Zimmer-frame seats to yoga eye-pillows. I worked with them partly for idealistic reasons and partly to keep my costs low." - Marije Braber, @lovelylane

As a producer, Marije Braber moved into the advertising industry in 2004 where she took the job of radio and television producer at PPGH/JWT and later TBWA/Neboko. Sounds ideal, but were there any downsides? “Of course. It was highly demanding and you had to deal with lots of bad behavior and outright lies, such as clients contradicting themselves. And the pressure was constant; I sometimes found myself answering emails at four in the morning. I worked myself into the ground for a salary that didn’t reflect the effort. I don’t even recall cooking myself a proper meal during the six years that I worked there. I had no private life and no partner. I was 32 by the time it ended and was starting to worry that I’d never have kids. It basically ended in a burn-out.” - Marije Braber

She met her big love, Chris in 1999, yet they didn't last as a couple. When Marije bumped into @chriszegersinsta 10 years later that all changed: “I’d allowed him to see the real me as opposed to a façade, and I began to understand how empowering this could be in my interactions with others. It’s how I’ve operated ever since — my vulnerability has become my greatest strength.” - Marije Braber @lovelylane

➖ New Interview➖
As a teenager, Marije Braber used to buy secondhand clothes from the flea market at Waterlooplein and customise them. After a successful career in television production, she decided to switch careers. At a sewing class she began to work on her own projects. By making trousers out of terry cloth for son Eden and decorating them with rainbow and geese patches, she began to build a collection. Pretty soon her neighbours and the other mothers at Eden’s daycare were requesting something similar for their kids, and Lovely Lane was born. Marije recently launched a women’s collection as well that embodies the same Seventies vibe. It turned into a huge hit. How did she build all that from scratch and how did being highly sensitive jumpstart it all.

Q: You’re also deeply interested spirituality, and have travelled to India a few times for this. What drew you to it?
A: "Meditation, which I got into because I needed to still my thoughts. As is often the case, I became curious about the origin of the practice, which I discovered was Vipassanā, a form of meditation that originated in India and involves spending ten days in a monastery in complete isolation: no distractions, phones, books, members of the opposite sex, or sex at all, for that matter."
Q: And what have you learned so far?
A: "That the universe within is just as endless as the physical universe without. When you do nothing but sit still for a while, your real emotions begin to break the surface of your consciousness: happiness, fear, jealousy, sadness. I’ve split my sides laughing while meditating, but I’ve also experienced deep sadness. It’s like one big grey cloud is passing overhead, and then another, but then suddenly there’s blue sky, and you feel it within. And when you step outside, it’s as though you’re seeing the world for the first time. I remember journeying through India on a motorbike after one of these ten-day retreats and being aware of how wonderful the wind felt on my skin. Everything felt like a new discovery, just as it had when I was 11 and in love with a girl called Liese. Lying side by side, the hairs on my arm touching hers, which was almost erotic. Boooom! I experienced the same level of intensity as a 37-year-old on emerging from the ashram." - David Snellenberg of @dawnamsterdam

Q: You became a father in 2014; what did this signify for you?
A: "Someone once told me that we have three axes in life: the horizontal and the vertical, and one that plots degrees of depth. I understood exactly what they meant once we had Parker. You discover a whole new layer of love. I’m not saying it’s better than the love you experience in your relationship with your partner or friends, or in your bond with your siblings or parents, but it is a whole new kind of love. I learned that you need to cut yourself some slack because you will make mistakes. It’s really fascinating, becoming a father. It makes you think about your legacy. If I dropped dead today, I’d want Parker to remember me with pride." - @davidsnellenberg @dawnamsterdam
